Getting started decluttering your home

Here are 5 easy steps to start decluttering your home and your life. 

# – 1 Start with a goal 

Before you begin decluttering, it’s important to set a goal for yourself. Determine what you want to achieve and how you want your home to look and feel. This will help keep you motivated and focused throughout the process.

#2 – Start small 

As I mentioned above, it is overwhelming when you look at how cluttered and unorganized your home is as a whole. When you start with one task or one room it feels much more doable. Choose a room that you use most frequently to get started. This will help you to see the big impact it will make on your everyday life. 

#3 – Sort

When you are starting the process it is easier if you can sort your stuff into separate piles or boxes. I personally like to use what is called the 5-Box Method. To do this, You will need to find 5 boxes, bags, or bins to help you categorize the items in your home. This will allow you to go through and sort each item in your home.

  • Keep – Items you, or your family, use regularly, tor is a necessity, and that you already have a space for.

  • Donate – Items that are in good condition that you are willing to donate.

  • Sell – This box is for anything you can sell. If you are unlikely to get around to listing the item for sale, donate it instead.

  • Store – If you have storage space, and the item is something you will use again, such as baby clothes, bikes, or sports equipment, you can opt to store the item.

  • Trash – Any broken, torn, or no longer needed item that is not in a condition to donate. Try not to hold on to items thinking you will fix them at a later stage.

  • Bonus – You can also add an additional box for “maybe” items. These are for items you’d like to revisit at a later, or final, stage of the process.

#4 – Maintenance 

Once you have started the decluttering process you want to have a plan in place to maintain it so that it doesn’t get overwhelming again. Try to make it a habit to put things where they belong so that you can avoid the build-up of items laying around your house. Regularly spend time decluttering and organizing so you feel more in control.

This could mean scheduling in 20 minutes a day or every other day to spend time putting things away. 

Remember, this won’t all get done in one day. It is a process and takes time. By simplifying your space you can create a more functional home for you and your family.
