The Importance Of Goal Setting And How It Works

If you are new to goal planning and breaking your goals down into action steps, no worries, I am going to walk you through the entire process to make it simple for you to hit your goals.

Setting goals is important because it gives you a clear and precise direction for what you want to achieve. When you set specific goals you are increasing your chances of success for your desired outcomes.

It’s not enough to just say you want to do something. You need a specific goal and then an action plan to make it happen. Otherwise, it feels extremely overwhelming to actually achieve the things you want in life.

Goal Setting Step By Step

I’m sure you’ve seen a million different blog posts and articles about how to set goals and the step-by-step process so I am going to tailor this specifically to using a goal planner printable.

The process is often overcomplicated but is actually very simple.

Step 1: Start with what you value. What are your top priorities in life? This is where you need to get specific with what YOU value and want to achieve in life. I recommend starting with the Vision Board worksheet and also filling out the Bucket List worksheet inside the planner.

If you are unsure what goals you want this exercise will help you to clearly see what goals you want to set. Below is a more in-depth description of how to use those worksheets in the goal planner.

Step 2: After you have identified the top goals you want to focus on you need to get as specific as you can so that you can break it down into individual steps and tasks to accomplish.

Try to make your goals measurable, relevant and time-bound. You don’t want to set a goal like “I want a new job.” Get specific with it by describing the type of job and when you want to achieve this goal by. Think about why you want this goal or why is it important to you.

Step 3: Prioritize your goals. Which ones do you want to tackle first? This is where you can use the Yearly Goals worksheet and fill in some of your ideas for each month of the year.

Step 4: Make an action plan. Once you know your most important goals you need to break them down into smaller more manageable steps. This will make a huge difference in making the goals more doable. In the example we just talked about for making a goal to get a new job, you will now want to create individual steps to take to get that new job such as update resume, applying 3x per week, etc.

This is when you can fill out the Monthly Goals worksheet and add in all of your steps and the appropriate information for each goal.

Step 5: Track your progress. Monitor your progress by marking off the tasks that you complete as you work towards your goals. At the end of each month, complete the Monthly Reflections sheet to get a better grasp on what worked and what didn’t work. Seeing your progress will help you to continue on the journey of accomplishing your goals.

Although this isn’t an actual step in the process it is definitely very important.

CELEBRATE YOURSELF!

As you move closer and closer towards your goals make sure you set aside time to celebrate all your wins.
