Each year, the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest asks writers to submit “an atrocious opening sentence to the worst novel never written.” In this article Writer’s Relief found on LitHub.com, we learned the contest is named for Edward Bulwer-Lytton, best known for the iconic opening sentence, “It was a dark and stormy night.” Each year, thousands of writers submit their best (or rather worst) purple prose to the contest. This year’s grand prize-winning sentence includes salami, lingerie, a laundromat, and a detective agency. Phew!
