In Dinamarie’s Own Words

For years I worked in marketing communications, writing for financial companies. And while I was grateful to be paid to write, it wasn’t the type of writing I wanted to do. In fact, sometimes it seemed to interfere with my ability to tap into my creative voice. Once I stepped away to start a family, the urge to write for pleasure returned to me. I believe that playing with my children rekindled my ability to tune in to my artistic instincts.

Fast-forward to late 2019 when—in the lonely process of drafting a novel—I wondered if I’d ever be published. I decided that I couldn’t wait for the query process to yield an agent. I needed to know if there was an audience for my writing. Applying to Writer’s Relief was an important first step.

It started on day one when this aspiring novelist and fiction writer submitted poetry. New to this type of writing, I took a chance. It would be the first of many risks to help me grow. Writer’s Relief invited me to join in late 2019.

Many rejection letters later, I received my first acceptance in early 2020. I wrote and submitted more poetry. More poems were published. Then came some essays, short stories, and flash fiction. Once I had thought of myself as a fiction writer, an aspiring novelist—but clearly, there were more facets to my writing than I even realized. Taking chances and getting wins created momentum, and it helped me silence my inner critic and create. No longer fearful of rejection, I saw it as part of a subjective process that builds resilience.

The submission deadlines for my work left me no room to procrastinate by tinkering endlessly. Having another set of eyes on my work reassured me, especially when there were minimal suggested revisions. I said goodbye to impostor syndrome.

Writer’s Relief put me on a journey that resulted in more than publishing credits. The confidence and support I received continue to feed my creative spirit, enabling me to experiment with different styles and types of writing. Armed with a varied portfolio and an audience, I feel better equipped to query agents as I seek the traditional publication of my novel.

What lies ahead is unwritten. I look forward to my story unfolding with the help of Writer’s Relief.
