How To Use Hemingway Editor Online

Ernest Hemingway, noted for his straightforward and rather lean writing style, started his career as a news reporter. This could be where he learned to write succinctly. He used simple words to express profound meaning.

Ernest Hemingway

His style was so well recognized that Hemingway Editor was developed to help writers remove unnecessary words from their work.

Unless you need to work offline, choosing the online version will save you money.

When you enter the online editor, you can write within the editor or copy and paste your text. Check out the sample they provide below.

Hemingway Editor Sample

The first thing you notice is that this sample’s readability score was rated “Good” at a “Grade 6.”

The software also counts letters, characters, words, phrases, and paragraphs as we read. Plus, we have the following:

  • Adverbs (highlighted in blue)
  • Use of the passive voice (highlighted in green)
  • Phrases with a more straightforward substitute (highlighted in purple)
  • Sentences with difficulty reading (highlighted in yellow)
  • Sentences that are really difficult to read (highlighted in red)

The write mode is for distraction-free writing. Easily switch from editing mode to write mode. The screen will look like this when using Hemingway’s “write” mode.

Hemingway write mode

Now to get into detail.

Readability Score

The program uses an algorithm to estimate the minimum education level necessary for understanding your work. For example, a sixth-grade reading level does not mean that your work is intended for sixth graders. It does imply that the lowest degree of education required to comprehend your writing is at the sixth grade.

Hemingway Readability

Writing at the college level does not imply that your writing will be better than at the sixth-grade level. Actually, it may be more tedious and so full of jargon that readers will struggle to understand what you’re trying to say.

If you write content for clients, you will notice that they generally ask for writing at the sixth or seventh-grade level. This makes your writing easy, free of jargon, and ensures that most readers understand it.

Formatting Options

At the top of the Hemingway screen, you’ll see the following formatting options for your text:

  • Bold
  • Quote
  • Link
  • H1
  • H2
  • H3
  • Numbers
  • Bullets
  • Link
  • Italic

Bloggers will like these formatting options. This is because you can tidy up your writing style in the Hemingway editor. And then use the formatting options offered to prepare your work for publication.

Colored Highlights

The Hemingway Editor uses five color-coded suggestions.

  • Yellow Sentences: These are sentences that Hemingway thinks are a bit too long or complicated. It suggests separating or simplifying the sentences marked in yellow.
  • Red Sentences: These sentences may confuse readers because they’re too long. Or the words are too complicated. You’ll have to break up or rewrite these sentences until the red highlight disappears.
  • Purple Words: Purple words need to be simplified. Hover your cursor over them to check Hemingway’s suggestions.
  • Blue Words: These are adverbs that might show weak or hesitant language. According to Hemingway, they should be deleted.
  • Green Phrases: Green means a sentence uses the passive voice. While this may be okay in some situations, an active voice is usually more forceful.

Below we’ll go into more detail on what the colors mean.

Weak Phrases and Adverbs

Hemingway Editor highlights your adverbs in blue to make it easier to find them. If you agree with Stephen King on adverbs, this is a huge help.

“I believe the road to hell is paved with adverbs, and I’m not afraid to say so.” Stephen King.

Stephen King

You may have a kinder attitude toward adverbs. Some people believe that adverbs add flavor to their writing. Even so, highlighting them is helpful and makes them easy to find.

It also finds weak phrases that can be removed and highlights them in blue. Ironically, the Hemingway Editor App highlighted the weak phrase in King’s quote, marked in blue. And it also marked the passive voice in green.

Stephen King Quote in Hemingway

“I believe” is unnecessary in this scenario. You could just say, “The road to hell is paved with adverbs.” It gets the same message across but sounds more powerful.

But what if removing the phrase changes what Stephen King is trying to say? What if it changes the way he writes too? So be careful you don’t accept all Hemingway’s suggestions.

Make sure the suggestions don’t change your voice too much. The program allows you to remove them with a single click, which is probably the best solution. For example, “probably the best” can be changed to “the best.”

But, removing “fast” from “run fast” leaves you with “run.” And that changes what you’re trying to say. And Hemingway doesn’t recommend any other verb, so you must correct them yourself.

Adverbs aren’t all bad. A few are acceptable. But you don’t want them cluttering your writing. Try to get rid of them everywhere you can.

Passive Voice

There are a ton of reasons why experts advise against using the passive voice. The passive voice creates a statement in which the subject is given an action. In contrast, active voice provides a sentence in which the subject performs an action. Passive speech frequently produces confusing, indirect, and wordy sentences. The active voice delivers clearer, more succinct sentences.

Decide who or what does the action and use that person or thing as sentence’s subject. Then you’ll convert a sentence from passive to active voice.

The passive voice seems evasive because it is at times. One big criticism of the passive voice is that it is frequently used to shirk responsibility:

“In dealing with the crisis, mistakes were made.”

“ it was determined that the necessary procedure had been followed.”

“No disruption to the occupants is expected.”

With examples like these, it’s easy to see how using the passive voice can be a helpful method to hedge or wiggle out of taking responsibility. And some speech writers do just that.

Hemigway passive voice

Hemingway Editor promises “strong” writing, which doesn’t come from passive sentences. But, passive voice is not a grammatical mistake. It’s a personal preference, and you may have reasons for using it.

If you’re trying to reduce or limit passive voice, this tool can help. Passive phrases are highlighted in green.

Complex Language

The program highlights phrases that work better with a simpler alternative. And also suggests a replacement. Most writers have a habit of overusing the word “however.”

Hemingway replace words suggestions

The software highlights it in purple and offers suggestions when you hover over the highlighted word. “But” or “still” are better alternatives to “however.” Other typical simpler words are “use” rather than “utilize” and “goal” rather than “objective.”

Once again, you have the final say. Use it if you need to say “utilize” and if it fits your style.

Hard To Read Sentences

If a statement becomes too difficult or long, Hemingway Editor flags it in yellow. It’ll be highlighted in red if it’s particularly long and complicated.

Hemingway hard to read sentences

Long sentences can be modified, reduced, and split up to make them easier to understand. The Hemingway Editor strongly suggests breaking these sentences up. It also recommends that you delete all of your red sentences.

Hemingway has no word or sentence suggestions. You’ll have to rewrite everything yourself. But, it does remove the highlighting as you cut those sentences down.

Most difficult sentences, in general, are run-on sentences that can be solved by dividing them into two independent sentences.

One feature I really like is being able to remove the highlights on the fly. But it doesn’t guarantee your writing is ready to publish. It simply means that your statements are brief and to the point.

Still, the program is highly user-friendly, and your editor should appreciate the short, direct writing.

Hemingway Editor Summary Of Findings

See the image below. It gives a “good” rating, with a readability level of sixth grade. You also get your word count. It’s also well below the adverb and passive voice targets. You might simplify a couple of phrases and shorten some sentences. But you could go over them all and decide to leave them alone. And there are no sentences that are “very difficult to read.”

Hemingway Summary

Is Hemingway’s Editor Any Good?

While not ideal, Hemingway Editor is worth using. It can help you tighten up your writing and spot errors. It’s simple to use, helps find obvious faults, and simplifies your language.

Break the rules as you please. After all, it’s your writing style, and no computerized editing can substitute human judgment. And as long as you know you’re breaking the rules, you’ll be okay.

The Hemingway Editor can assist you in identifying potential issues. For the most part, I agree with the app: I can use simpler words. But, I don’t like to separate all of my “difficult to read” lines because I think my writing style benefits from variation. And, on the odd occasion, I like adverbs, complex sentences, and the word “although.”

Hemingway Editor Review: The Bottom Line

Hemingway has some wonderful features, and it’s a fantastic tool for checking the readability of your writing. It’s good for anything like a blog post, essay, or article, but not so much for a whole book. Depending on the media you’re writing for, the projected read time and readability levels are also valuable data.

The other major deciding factor will be how closely your writing style fits Hemingway’s standards. If you want to write short, concise sentences, this software will help you. However, if you’re not writing in the Hemingway style – for example, creating a “wordy” piece of fiction or some nonfiction genres where passive voice is okay – this software won’t be much use.

It’s free to try out, so give it a shot; it may help you become a better writer!

On that note, let’s take a last look at the best Hemingway Editor alternatives.
