Summertime is the perfect season for kicking back and expanding your horizons with a great book. Just because you’re relaxing doesn’t mean you can’t be growing as a person and as a physician.
Here are some of my most recent and favorite reads that have helped me improve my mindset, my branding, and my finances. This list is a good place to start, and I promise the knowledge you gain will have a significant payoff for your work-life balance, your practice, and your financial future.
Limitless by Jim Kwik is the first book I would suggest because it teaches you specific techniques to unlock the power of your brain and learn anything quicker. The techniques in this book will help increase your productivity and identify what you want in every aspect of your life. The biggest contribution of this book is the ability to gain clarity on your goals and how to get there.
Die with Zero flips conventional thinking about wealth, finances, and retirement upside down. Modern philosophy about building wealth focuses on having more than you might need in retirement. Perkins’ book focuses on the concept that once you have enough to live comfortably, you should focus on having experiences, happiness, and keeping healthy.
Atomic Habits is a book that changed my life and the way I think about time management and building habits that get results. This book presents evidence-based strategies to help you transform your life and set habits into motion that will help you reach your goals in all areas of life. This book uses a proven method of making small changes every day that builds over time.
The 10X Rule: Grant Cardone explores the difference between those who achieve their goals and those who fail. This book is motivational, using the example of Silicon Valley engineers and how they think about the effort that they put into achieving their goals as an example of how to achieve success. The main principle of the book is that you should set goals that are 10X bigger than what you think you can do. Then, the book shows you how to put in 10X more effort to achieve them. Cardone encourages you to take responsibility for your results and what you achieve.
The One Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results – Gary Keller and Jay Papasan
The One Thing focuses on building a productivity mindset by doing less, and not more. This is an eye-opening book that brings awareness to things that you did not realize were stealing your time and your productivity. When you put the principles in this book into action, you can begin to see real results quickly.
Never Split the Difference: Negotiating If Your Life Depended On It. Negotiation is a skill that everyone needs. Whether it is negotiating your salary and benefits as a physician or selling your home, the art of negotiation is the key to success. The author is a former hostage negotiator for the FBI and has much to teach the average person. The methods in this book apply to many situations in life.
The EntreMD Method: A Proven Roadmap for Doctors Who Want to Live Life and Practice Medicine on Their Terms – Nneka Unachukwu
The EntreMD Method. Physicians must not only know how to diagnose disease and treat patients, but to be a success, you must be a businessperson and entrepreneur first. It also suggests some practices that can even reverse some aspects of aging. This one is worth reading because it represents the newest research in the area of longevity.
Building a StoryBrand. Building a good story about your brand is the key to getting people to respond. It is a skill every physician should know. Miller builds on seven key points that every brand story should have to send a clear, concise message that inspires your audience to take action.

It covers the basics of investing, how to manage debt, what types of insurance you need, and other finance topics for physicians.

Defining Wealth for Women. Dr. Bonnie Koo takes a look at the challenging world of finance for professional women. Everything you probably ever learned about money is wrong, and this book tells you how to break through the self-imposed ceilings that often hold women back from their true earning potential. This book can be a transformative experience for women in the medical profession.
I believe it’s important to be well diversified not only in finances but in knowledge as well. So I’m constantly trying to improve myself in the areas of productivity, building wealth, and living a fulfilling life. Trust me, there’s a lot here to improve and I’m working on it.
