The 1k Niche Property Project – Month 3

0

Welcome Back to The 1k Niche Property Project!

We’re now three full months into this case study I have to say I’m extremely happy with what I’ve seen so far, but we have a LONG way to go (and grow) before we will hit our goal.

Before we dive into what happened this month, let’s do a quick recap to see how we got to this point.

The Goal

Our goal for this 1K niche property project is to give you a step-by-step follow-along guide for how we took a brand-new niche website from zero dollars in revenue and zero traffic to $1000 of consistent monthly recurring revenue.

We are doing this for a couple of different reasons.

First, this is a process that we love and truly believe can work for virtually anyone seeking to add another stream of income to their life.

Unfortunately, many people mistakenly believe that this process is difficult and/or unachievable for them, so we wanted to show an in-depth view of exactly what it takes to get the results we’re after.

Second, we wanted to test a few different theories as it relates to niche websites to see if it could help speed up this process for us (and everyone else who is following along).

The History:

For a complete history of each month, you want to check out our feed here.

This will give you the ability to click on each post and see exactly what happened from month to month to see how much we made how much we spent and how much work was involved along the way.

As a quick recap for how we got to where we were at the beginning of month three of this project, we worked with our friends over at niche website builders to help us find and select a niche and build out all of the website content for us.

While this is typically a step we do ourselves, we wanted to test the use of an aged domain ( a domain that’s already been used on the Internet and start this project with a large number of articles on day one (44 articles).

This process took about a month and a half and at the beginning of last month, we were handed the keys to the website.

Up until this point, we have not added any additional content were done any additional work to the site, because we wanted to test to see how quickly this content will rank and what kind of traffic it will start to bring in, without us doing anything other than the initial work.

That brings us to this month (month 3 of this challenge), let’s take a deep dive into everything that’s been going on…I’m LOVING what I’m seeing so far.

The Activity This Month:

I can’t think of any other way to put this so I’ll just go ahead and say… I’m excited.

Traffic:

If you’ve been following along, you know that last month we started to see some keyword indexing and a slow trickle of organic traffic starting to come to the site.

Over the last 30 days, this small trickle has increased to almost exactly 10 organic visits per day which is a 30% growth over last month.

While this 30% number in and of itself is exciting to see (I am always excited with 30% growth) when I started digging into the data I found something even more interesting.

While for the month we averaged 10 organic visits per day, that number has exploded in the last few weeks.

The last two weeks of this month saw a 54% increase over the previous two weeks, meaning we’re now seeing between 15 and 20 visits per day from organic traffic.

While we still have quite a long way to go before we will have enough traffic to hit our revenue goal the fact that we are seeing this type of growth early on is a promising sign, especially when paired with some of the other metrics that we can use to help project future growth.

Keyword Rankings:

In addition to the great increase we saw in organic traffic this month, we’ve also seen an explosion in the number of keywords that we rank for.

We keep track of this number, especially early on, because it’s what’s called a leading indicator.

Essentially, it’s a metric that can help us understand what will happen with our organic traffic in the future.

The more keywords we are indexed for, the more opportunity we have to be found by Google search.

Additionally, if we see a drop in this number it can be an indication of a future drop in organic traffic and can help us address any problems before they arrived.

As of the writing of this article, we are showing our site is being indexed for 509 individual keywords.

This is a massive increase (254%) over the 200  keywords we were indexed for at this time last month.

While this number sounds very promising (and that is), it’s only a high-level overview and needs to be analyzed a little further to see where the growth is happening.

After all, if all of our keyword growth is happening on page 10 of the Google search results, the chance of that turning into traffic in the short term is very low.

With that being said, we saw a 269% increase of keywords that were indexed with a rank between 10 and 100 in the Google search results (455 total).

While these keywords will slowly start moving up the ranks, they won’t translate into short-term traffic but we may start to see the benefit of some of these keywords towards the end of this month and early next month.

To get a better understanding of what will impact our organic traffic in the short term, we also want to take a look at the keywords that have decent potential to drive traffic (those that will appear on the first-page meeting there ranked somewhere between one and 10).

Here, we also saw a 200% increase in the number of keywords that were ranked between 4 and 10 in the Google search results (24 total).

Additionally, we saw a 15% increase (30 keywords total) in keywords which are now ranking between positions one and three in the Google search results.

While a 15% increase in the highest-ranking terms may not seem as exciting as a 200% increase in the terms ranking between four and 10, we know it takes time to rank in these positions and we are excited about the growth in the other two areas, because we know it will translate to growth here as well over the next few months.

Despite all of this positive growth, I don’t think we will be able to achieve our goal on the short end of the timeframe we talked about, without some additional content input in the next few months.

That’s not a huge surprise (we never really expected to get all of the page views we needed from the initial content), but one can hope, right? 🙂

Content Creation:

Continuing with the plan we hatched over the last few months to let our content that we created for the content blitz (the initial ~40  articles we published) age, we haven’t created any additional content this month.

I do expect that to change towards the end of month 4.

Scott and I have a meeting planned for later this week to discuss our next steps with this site.

I don’t expect us to be publishing more than one or two articles a week moving forward, but if or when we do, you can be sure that we will keep you updated.

The Money

Now that you have a better understanding of why we are excited about this project, you may be wondering what is happening on the money front.

There’s not a ton to report this month, but with what I’m seeing on the analytics side of things, I expect that to start changing (quickly) in month 4.

Expenses

Since we haven’t added any additional content (when we do we will be outsourcing it, meaning there will be a small cost associated with each article we add to the site) and the initial investment included all of our hosting costs for the first year, we had no additional expenses in month three.

Month 3 Expenses: $0

Earnings:

While we could start earning a small amount of revenue from an ad network like Ezoic or AdSense, our current plan is to hold off for another month or two to continue to allow the site to grow without the distraction of ads.

As a result, we also haven’t earned any revenue from the site yet.

That’s A Wrap:

Overall, I have spoken I’m extremely excited with where the 1K niche property profit is at the end of month three.

Despite the fact that we haven’t added any additional content or even really touched the site at all (other than to look at the numbers) we are starting to see the signs of the “hockey stick” style growth that we would typically expect to see at the 5 or 6 month mark.

While this does not completely confirm some of the things that we are testing, it’s a great early sign.

I expect this month to have a lot more activity, both in terms of growth and some actual work from Scott myself to help the site continue to grow.

If you’d like to follow along with history and see exactly how long it takes us to start learning our goal of $1000 a month make sure to check back next month for an update.
